Blog Post #7 Introduction

The whole concept of slavery could have been avoided. After all,slavery is just due to people being greedy for resources they never had. If you think of slavery in the United States, the main resources grown there were cotton and tobacco. However, people never tend to think about slavery outside of that because that's all we were ever taught. Some people don't know there was slavery in other places like Barbados. Barbados is home of pink beaches, Rihanna, along with rum and sugarcane. When you think of sugar, it's like nature's sweetener right? Well it's not innocent you think when in reality, it's what kick started the selfish business that is slavery in Barbados and sugar comes from sugarcane,so it's because of sugarcane! The uses of sugarcane in Barbados were originally only for fuel, rum production and feed stock and now to make sugar but what did they use before sugar? Like what did the British use to sweeten their tea? They used the sugar that Barbados produced and used at their convenience. However, they didn't always have infinite abundance of sugar. Even now, Barbados' sugar industry has declined so what happened and how was Barbados having a booming sugar industry possible? One thing is certain is the relationship between sugarcane and slavery were highly dependent on each other and left a long-lasting impact in Barbados. In Barbados, you couldn't have one without the other. There was a definite connection between sugarcane and slavery that brought social, economic and political consequences.
